Meridian Magazine - Setting New Trends

Imagine your teenage daughter smiling with delight as she twirls in front of the mirror. Think of a bride, dressed in white, aglow as she stands before you. Consider seeing your sister, your mother, your girlfriends, laughing together in dresses that really are just right. “Finally” you hear them exclaim, “The Perfect Dress!” Scenes like these seem to happen only after exhaustive searching, particularly for LDS women, for whom the perfect dress must also be modest.

Yet due to the efforts of Dave Young, CEO of BeautifullyModest.com , scenarios like these aren’t just for the imagination; they are a daily reality.

Dave isn’t what one might typically expect from a CEO of a women’s dress store. In fact, the fashion industry was perhaps the last thing on Dave’s mind during his schooling and for much of his professional life.

Dave was baptized at the age of 22 into the LDS church and served a mission in Seattle, Washington. Following his mission, he pursued an MBA from Pepperdine and a career in software. He followed the path to business management consulting and embarked on a four-year search for a promising business opportunity. Eventually, Dave was introduced to Keith Halls, the previous owner of Allyse’s Bridal and Formal and BeautifullyModest.com.

Knowing that the company represented his values and beliefs, Dave analyzed the business and recognized great potential; in 2007 he acquired the company.

Dave’s belief that those who are modestly dressed allow their inner light to shine gives the real purpose to his work. “I feel like this has become my mission” Dave explains. “I’m able to take a stand for modesty - which is something I know Heavenly Father wants me to do - and as long as I don’t allow anything in our store to go against church standards, I know I can rely upon the Lord for help.”

Dave has taken steps toward fulfilling the company’s vision of being first not only in modesty, but first in fashion as well. When he first saw the dresses that Beautifully Modest produced, he felt it was time for a change: “I remember looking at every dress and thinking they all looked too similar. I knew we had to make some changes.” These changes began with the hiring of Lindsay Nordyke, the Director of Creative Design for a well-known international label. Dave explains, “We were able to recruit Lindsay as she left a major firm whose dresses you see in all the bridal magazines and can order from all the high-end bridal shops.

In fact, a number of the company’s previous styles were inspired by her designs. Now beginning with our 2010 line, we have her original creativity throughout each dress. Not only that, we are using the same manufacturers as several of the highest quality brands.”

Beautifully Modest provides the specifications for modesty, and Lindsay uses her vast knowledge of styles and trends to create real leading designer originals. Dave added, “We are making a very serious move to the next level with designs and quality that modest customers have been looking for, but have never been seen in the LDS market.”

With a large 15,000 square foot store called Allyse’s Bridal and Formal, at the University Mall in Orem, Utah, a smaller store in American Fork, Utah, and a new store in Henderson, Nevada, Beautifully Modest is expanding. The line can also be found in select retailers across the country.

“We have sent our dresses all over the world, and found large demand in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia. People come from all over the country specifically to shop at Allyse’s. Recently, a family drove from South Dakota, and we even had someone fly from Australia to get a dress at our store” says Dave.

Fashionable, modest, and elegant clothing won’t be enough, Dave feels, if customers don’t have a wonderful experience from start to finish in his stores. He explains, “As far as I’m concerned, customer service provides the best competitive edge. We want our sales consultants to always be on their toes and help our customers feel special when they shop here.”

With a staff of 65 women, Dave says his sales consultants are extensively trained to know styles, fabrics, cuts, colors and body types. The consultants are also trained to be attentive to their customers—they’ll bend over backwards to help you find the dress you love.

Beautifully Modest has on hand over one million dollars worth of inventory, in sizes 0 through 28, which means they most likely have your dream dress right there in the store.

“You don’t have to wait eight to twelve weeks while we order in the dress you want,” Dave says. “We have it right here for you to try on, and we have six dedicated seamstresses who can get alterations and modifications done in a timely manner. We know how important these dresses are for weddings, proms and other special occasions.”

With high-quality customer service and fashion forward styles, Beautifully Modest dresses are becoming the first choice in fashion for many women. The dresses are reasonably priced with prom and party dresses ranging from one hundred to four hundred and fifty dollars, and wedding dresses ranging anywhere from one hundred to twelve hundred dollars. Beautifully Modest also offers day dresses ranging from forty dollars to seventy dollars.

With a fifteen-year old daughter of his own, Dave knows how important it is to provide modest clothing for the young women of the world today. “True beauty comes from within. A young woman who is dressed elegantly and modestly allows her true beauty to emerge. She will have a glow about her because she will have the spirit with her.” Dave insists, “Modesty doesn’t have to be boring or unattractive. We watch the fashion industry closely. We pay attention to our customers. Then we design our line around what is most fashionable.”

One way he is keeping his finger on the pulse of modest fashion is with the Beautifully Modest Fashion Team. Each year the company looks for high school age representatives from all over the United States. Each girl that is chosen gets to attend a summer “Fashion Camp” where they are trained in modeling, hair and makeup, fashion shows and commitment to modesty. They then model at various bridal fairs and events, and at the end of their year they receive a free dress from Beautifully Modest.

The company also holds a $50,000 Wedding of the Year Giveaway which is in its sixth year and has become a smashing success. The company works with top wedding vendors to provide a fairytale wedding, free of charge. Applications for the wedding can be found in the Allyse’s Bridal and Formal catalogue and on-line at www.beautifullymodest.com. Those interested in finding out more about the Fashion Team can contact Allyse’s Bridal and Formal at 801-226-4706.

With the challenge in today’s world to find fashions that are beautiful and modest, people like Dave Young and his commitment to modesty make shopping a little less daunting and a lot more enjoyable. All the work and effort to maintain these high standards are worth it, Dave says with a smile, when he sees how happy customers are as they walk out the door with that “perfect dress.”

Calling out to ALLYSE'S BRIDAL

Modestly Dressing Large and Small
By Kathryn H. Kidd

Every woman who tries to dress modestly is fighting an uphill battle in these days of spaghetti straps, bare midriffs, and miniskirts.  And if people of normal size think dressing modestly isn’t easy, you can only imagine how hard it is for people who are too small or (horrors!) too big to fit in standard clothing.

Today’s question is posed for all of us who are trying to dress modestly, but especially for those who are hard to fit.  What do you do to get modest clothing?  Where do you find it?

I’ll let two readers speak for themselves, and I hope you have the help they need.  First, we’ll give the larger ladies the podium.  After all, the average size woman in America is a size 16:

I have seen all the advertising for the clothing companies that sell modest clothing targeted mostly at LDS women and girls. My daughter loves the clothing.

Here is my problem. I am a sister of a larger size. Most of the clothing these companies sell stops at about a size 16 or 18 (x-large). Don’t they realize that those of us who are larger also want to dress modestly but still be in style? It can be just as hard for me to find modest clothing as it is for my 18-year-old daughter.

I do sew and I have made things for myself, but finding the time to sew can be a challenge and sometimes it costs more to make it yourself then if you could just go and buy clothes ready made. I am not a larger sized woman by choice. Is there anyone else out there who has experienced this situation?

Not your average size but still modest

Is there anyone, indeed!  As someone who probably outweighs you by a hefty amount, I can add a hearty “Amen!” to this letter.  I have a close friend who once asked why I wear the clothes I do.  I told her, “I don’t have a choice.  This is the kind of clothing they make for people like me.”

That being the case, I’m excited to see what the readers come up with to help those of us who are generously proportioned.  But before we open the call to responses, let’s hear from the other end of the spectrum:

I have recently returned to church activity after many years of not attending church.  I have never paid any particular attention to modesty issues before, because I have always dressed in conservative business attire.  But now that I am getting ready to go to the temple, I am acutely uncomfortable in my wardrobe.  I never wore clothing that I considered to be immodest, but I am tall and thin, and clothing isn’t designed for people like me.  The standard skirt length for people who wear size 2 is 21 inches, which falls halfway between my knees and the top of my legs.  I feel uncomfortable when I’m walking in such short skirts, but sitting modestly is virtually impossible.  I carry a shawl around with me, even in the summer, to put over my knees whenever I sit.

There are friends in the ward who dress in the “Mormon style” of buying what they want and wearing a t-shirt underneath to make it modest, or who buy maxi-skirts to solve the problem of sitting modestly.  Although I would never criticize these styles for others, I could never pull it off.  I want to continue dressing in conservative business attire — I just want clothes that are long enough to reach my wrists (for jackets) or my knees (for dresses and skirts).  Can anybody help?

Leggy in Lincoln

Okay, readers — I’m about to do something I almost never do.  I’m going to ask you for names and links and telephone numbers of companies that specialize in modest attire for Latter-day Saints.  Send ‘em all to me.  Tell me the name of the company, what you like about the company, and how to contact the company.  And if the company specializes in clothes for big people or tiny ones (and especially if they don’t gouge customers who happen to be in odd sizes), I especially want to hear from you.

If you’re a legitimate tailor out there who is experienced in making custom clothing, be sure to include references who can be contacted, as well as general prices for the services you provide.  I want to help people who need help, but I also don’t want anyone getting fleeced in the name of service.

Send your letters to meridianmagazine@aol.com.  We’ll publish your letters next week.

Until next time — Kathy

Fun Ideas

5 Hot Wedding Color Ideas …

Before you buy certain wedding items like invitations, bridesmaid dresses, flowers, and even cake, it’s important to think of all the colors you would like to incorporate. Here are 5 wedding color ideas that may help you with planning the wedding day of your dreams.

1.  Yellow is Hot for Spring or Summer…                                  Yellow floral arrangements can include rosesdaisiesdaffodilscymbidium orchids, and calla liliesWhite, blue, or green are great colors to accent your bright hues of yellow. Fun centerpieces of lemons will get your party talking about how creative you are. Yellow is a funbright color and doesn’t have to look like the yellow bus color you remember from elementary school. Make your wedding day shine just as bright as your beautiful smile.

2. Bright blue as the ocean or as dark as the night sky…

Blue comes in many different shades and can be great for all seasonsDarkershades of blue are great for fall and winter while light, brighter shades of blue are beautiful for spring and summerHydrangeastulipsdelphiniums, and poppies are beautiful for full bouquets and are nice accents with other flowers of white, yellow, or orange. Hues of tiffany bluetealnavy, and cobalt are stunning on manybridesmaids.  We will be using a teal blue with white accent colors for our wedding. So far I have purchased teal blue invitations and when we go dress shopping this May we’re hoping to find teal bridesmaid dresses.

3. Red is fun, vibrant, and very popular…

Bright, apple red can be found throughout the year, but is nice in the winter to combine with shades of green for those celebrating Christmas. Red is very easy to find in the floral department with beautiful rosescalla liliespoppiesdahlias and peonies.Centerpieces can be fun with red apples in tall hurricane vases or red ornamentsduring the Christmas season. Some bridal gowns now come with accent colors orribbons and red is a very hot color for doing so and will have everyone talking about your extraordinary dress.

4. Purple might be the “it” color right now, but will forever be hot…

Purple is another color that has bright shades that are perfect for the spring andsummer seasons while darker shades are just as perfect for the fall and winter. Bouquets of dahliashydrangeasrosesfreesia, and orchids are always a great pick in hues of purple. It is an elegant color that can be complimented by shades of pink, white, and green. Your bridesmaids and even your groomsmen will be confident in purple.

5. Green is not just an accent color with leaves any more…

Hydrangeascymbidium orchids, and spider chrysanthemums are all beautiful flowers that are much more than just green weeds. Limes and green apples make great centerpieces for any creative bride who is looking for something a little different. And don’t be afraid to use those leavesferns, and vegetables like artichokes within your floral arrangements and centerpieces. Details that are more than what’s expected always make for a memorable wedding. Green can also be made simple if that is your pleasure just as any color.

Testimonial

We just got this new testimonial,

Vance Yoshikawa -

I rarely send testimonials; however, I wanted to share how much I appreciate your company. I live in New York and have three beautiful daughters. Two of which have gone to Proms and the other within a couple of years. Ironically, with all the fashion here, it is extremely difficult to find dresses that my daughters are comfortable wearing and as parents, we are comfortable supporting. We don’t consider ourselves prudes and we want our daughters to enjoy school and the extracurricular activities that they enjoy. They want to attend the Proms with their classmates and they have been asked by quality young -men. That being said, it is difficult to find something where the can still “fit in” with the fashions of today and not feel as though people are looking at them in a negative way. The dress we bought from you was worth every penny. My daughter got a lot of positive comments before and at the dance. She continues to get more positive comments via photos posted on facebook. Thank you for investing in such a worthwhile company. Vance

I loved the customer service! I had to go more than once while searching for my dress, and I finally found it here. Every time I went, they were very helpful and made sure I was comfortable the whole time. Some dresses are a little too expensive, but overall I would recommend this store to anyone. Especially if you're looking for modest dresses!

They do not take appointments, I asked when their slower times where, and ended up going in on a thursday evening. They let me try on anything and everything, they gave me tips, but were not pushy, a HUGE selection.

Great prices on alterations. The girls who work there don't always know what you need, though, so don't be afraid to ask around and find one who seems on top of things!

I didn't actually buy my gown here because I designed and made it myself. However I did go here to get ideas of what I wanted and they were wonderful.
